I knit; therefore, I am.
And a scarf pattern…
Well, that’s pretty pompous… But oddly, for me, it’s true. For a whole long time, I’ve been fiddling around with sticks and string. Since age six, in fact. (Oh, my.) In that time, I’ve come to love the rhythmic passing of loops over loops to yield warm and lovely things that demonstrate my love. They say the most meaningful gift a busy person can give is one that takes time to make. I hope that’s true.
Many people begin knitting with a scarf. A good exercise upon which to practice the essential elements of casting on, making fabric, and casting off. Have you ever knit such a thing? Or are you someone who has progressed to knitting in the round? Things like hats and mittens? Perhaps you’ve knit the much-loathed “boyfriend” sweater? (A guarantee that a relationship will founder soon after said sweater is conveyed. Been there, done that.)
If you’re interested in getting started or renewing an interest in knitting, here are some places to get help and encouragement.
First, become a member of RAVELRY. Ravelry is a beautiful online place where fibers, patterns, and makers comingle. This platform is a good place to store information and search for things to make. http://www.ravelry.com
Next, find your local yarn shop. Not only a place to buy, but local yarn shops are also communities of knowledgeable people who are anxious to help and encourage knitters at every stage of their craft journey.
Here in Maine, there are many, but some of my favorites are Knit Wits in Portland, Mother of Pearl and Grace Robinson in Freeport, Halcyon Yarn in Bath, and the Cashmere Goat in Camden.
Check Yelp in your area to find local yarn stores. Such fun!
